Message from Program Director
Dear Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Residency Program at BronxCare Health System.
As Program Director I would like to welcome you to our department. We have an excellent program that emphasizes primary care pediatrics and the comprehensive care of children in varying states of health and disease. Our setting in an underserved urban neighborhood affords ample experience with a wide variety of disease pathology, as well as the challenges of complex medical and social problems. Our exciting programs in research, adolescent medicine, and community pediatrics, as well as resources to refine cultural sensitivity and communication skills add special richness to the learning experience.
Most of your training will occur on the campuses of the BronxCare Health System where you will work with a diverse group of primary care and sub-specialty faculty who are dedicated to your training and committed to delivering excellent patient care. However, as a teaching affiliate of Mount Sinai Hospital and the Icahn School of Medicine we also utilize the sub-specialty resources of Mount Sinai Hospital to complement your extensive general pediatric experience. Furthermore, as a resident, you not only rotate through our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit but at one of the local tertiary care PICUs as well. This will provide you with a great deal of exposure to critically ill children.
We have always been proactive in applying the exciting changes in residency education. Our robust research curriculum for our residents has been in place for over 15 years, and many of our residents go on to present their research at local, regional, national and international conferences. They also participate in Quality Improvement projects under direct guidance from faculty and QI leaders. In addition to research and clinical education, resident well-being takes top priority. We have a resident wellness curriculum that focuses on body, mind, and soul. There are monthly resident wellness sessions that emphasize exercise, meditation, personal finance, and many other topics. We also have resident retreats and departmental outings that help rejuvenate and motivate everyone in our department.
In considering applicants, we look for personal qualities as well as academic credentials. We especially value strong motivation to learn, commitment to patients, flexibility, a sense of humor, and an interest in teaching others. Our residents must willingly and cheerfully help each other and contribute actively to ongoing educational activities. We recognize that residency will be a time of challenge as you learn about yourself and others in the pursuit of personal and professional growth. However, our resident-friendly environment will enable you to grow and thrive into your full potential.
If I can be of any assistance, today or in the future, please contact me. I look forward to meeting you!
